Rosy-Finch Newsletter - March is Not Over Yet!

One week left for March Feeder Counts!

March is rosy-finch migration season. After a quiet winter at bird feeders, we are hearing from volunteers that rosy-finches are on the move. From December through February you have submitted 454 Feeder Counts! Let's keep up the momentum with one week left to go in March! If you missed a Feeder Count, it is OK to reschedule.

Rosy-Finch Reward Winner

Leslie does her rosy-finch feeder counts at home in Ogden Valley, Utah. She has not observed any rosy-finches at her home feeder, but she travels up to nearby Powder Mountain, a known rosy-finch haunt, to get her rosy-finch fix.

"The piles of snow were so high that we could barely see the feeder. It took only a few minutes for a flock of 70 or more Gray-crowned Rosy-Finches to swoop in. One was even wearing bands that I was able to report!"

Thanks for joining us and sharing, Leslie! We cannot do this work without you!

For a chance to receive a rosy-finch embroidered Cotopaxi hip pack, be sure to sign up for your Feeder Counts and submit your data! One winner is selected each month.

Clean Your Feeders for the Health of our Birds

Remember - birds like a clean feeder! Feeders can be hotbeds for diseases like salmonella that birds can spread to each other. Give your feeders a good cleaning 2-3 times a month. Instructions can be found on Page 16 of our Feeder Count Guide

If you see dead or sick birds, remove feeders and bird baths for at least one month. This will help stop the spread. It’s okay if you need to cancel a feeder count!

We work closely with state wildlife agencies and will keep you posted if we hear of disease outbreaks and actions that need to be taken.
