How to Start Conserving Boreal Toads in Utah

1. Watch the 2024 Training Videos - Learn how to join the project and get trained as a boreal toad community scientist.

2. Sign Up for Project Updates - Add your email to our Boreal Toad List to get updates about the project.

3. Complete the Volunteer Form - Before participating in this project or picking up project materials, fill out our online Conservation Field Technician Volunteer Application Form.

4. Sign Up for a Field Visit - Once you've filled out the form, please sign up for a site visit (link will be available following our training). Don't forget to carefully read the notes at the top of the page and COVID requirements!

5. If You're Doing Individual Surveys, Print Field Forms and Protocol Materials - Those doing individual surveys will want to review the Boreal Toad Surveyor Packet and print field forms to take with you on site visits. Volunteers on group trips will have these materials provided.

6. Optional Toad Backpacks for Individual Surveys - If you'd like to gather water measurements, you can pick up field equipment from the Sageland Collaborative office or at the Hogle Zoo’s Guest Services desk—just ask to check out a toad backpack. You can check out or check in equipment from Monday-Sunday, 9am-1pm (you may keep the backpacks for a few days, but please be sure to check them back in for other volunteers to use).

Those doing group field trips will have these materials provided.

7. Start Conserving Boreal Toads - Thank you so much for your dedicated work! This statewide effort to conserve sensitive amphibians would not be possible without community scientists like you.
